One year later, he met Marianne Ginther at a political fund-raiser in Ohio, and within weeks, she told the journalist John Richardson, he asked her to marry him.

In New Hampshire, Gingrich seemed surprisingly confident for a man at the bottom of the polls. The building was packed with volunteers and curious locals eager to meet the candidate; strangely, though, nobody was making last-minute phone calls to voters. Elm Street temporarily had the giddy feel of the parking lot outside a Grateful Dead concert.
