What makes a page html5

Written by Anna Fitzgerald. HTML5 was designed to do virtually anything you want to do online without having to download browser plugins or other software. Want to create animations? Embed music and movies? Build advanced applications that run in your browser? You can with HTML5. The term refers to two things.

One is the updated HTML language itself, which has new elements and attributes. The second is the larger set of technologies that work with this new version of HTML — like a new video format — and enable you to build more complex and powerful websites and apps. Originally designed to semantically describe scientific documents, it has since evolved to describe much more. Most pages on the web today were built using HTML4. In that case, they would have to use non-standard proprietary technologies, like Adobe Flash, which required users to install browser plugins.

Cue, HTML5. HTML5 was designed to cut out the need for those non-standard proprietary technologies. With this new version of HTML, you can create web applications that work offline, support high-definition video and animations, and know where you are geographically located.

Each of these objectives informed the changes in this new version of HTML. HTML5 introduced several new semantically meaningful tags.

These make it easier to write cleaner code that clearly delineates style from content, which is particularly important to users with assistive technologies like screen readers.

You can also draw rectangles, circles, text, and other vector-based paths and shapes using this new element. In addition to all the standard form input types, HTML5 offers more, including: datetime, datetime-local, date, month, week, time, number, range, email, and url. Before HTML5, you needed browser plugins to embed audio and video content into web pages. This is a royalty-free video format developed by Google that provides a great compression to quality ratio.

This can be used with the video element and is supported by most browsers. HTML5 introduced the placeholder attribute. Note: to ensure that certain older browsers read the character encoding correctly, the entire character encoding declaration must be included somewhere within the first characters of your document. This is used by mobile devices only. You can read up a little more on these meta element features on MDN , but for now just know that, in most cases, this meta element with these settings is best for mobile-first, responsive websites.

As mentioned, all meta elements are optional but many have benefits for SEO and social media marketing. The next section in our HTML5 boilerplate includes some of those meta element options:. Using standard mode, most browsers will read your document the same way and they will actually understand what you are writing. Using these sections you clearly separate the information about your page the head from the actual content body.

Using these, you webpage would look like this:. What just happened with the indenting, you might think? We want to make sure you are well informed about every aspect of marketing which includes the background features which you may not be aware of. You may have already heard of HTML as a large majority of companies use this for coding and you may know some simple or not so simple HTML code already.

However, HTML5 is the newest addition to the coding family and in this post, we will answer the questions; what is HTML5 and why you should be using it now. It is the programming language that allows developers to build and structure the elements that make up a webpage or application.

One of the biggest advantages to HTML5 is that you can use it do whatever you want on your site without the need to use additional software such as browser plugins. Not only this, but as it is cross platform you can do this on any device you want from phones and tablets to Apple and Windows products.
