She was born on July 10, , in Clarion, Iowa. Her first teaching position was in Colfax, Iowa, where she taught eighth grade, but the following year, in , she moved to Lead, South Dakota, and taught third and fourth grades in that town until In the fall of , Ms. Culver accepted a teaching position in Seattle. Her year career in Seattle was spent in only two schools, the longest tenure being at John B. Allen, 65th Street and Phinney Avenue, where she taught third and fourth grade until She transferred to Nathanial Hawthorne School, located in Rainier Valley, and taught fourth grade there until her death in Ida Culver had a talent for finance.
In addition to pursuing her career as a teacher, Ms. Culver devoted some of her energy to finance. Our building was first built in , and many of us know and love the charm of an older building with a legacy in the neighborhood.
There are also a number of challenges associated with an aging building, and some of these challenges have become more profound as a result of the pandemic. We are exploring a range of possibilities to reimagine Ida Culver House Ravenna so that we can continue to be a place we can serve seniors for decades to come.
Pending approvals, which we expect would occur by early , we hope to begin a redevelopment project. In the meantime, we are still welcoming new residents into the community. Some of our new residents view this as an opportunity to test out senior living or relocating to Seattle. Others are looking for a short-term respite stay or a temporary or longer term solution to a problematic living situation. It was confusing for me, and I don't have dementia.
The way it was configured was just very confusing. There were too many walkways and too many elevators to get to one place. They had a salon and a nice swimming pool.
The activities were great, but my mother just wouldn't do them. I can't think of anything that they were lacking. I can't see anything that they could improve upon. The location is not very great. It's on a very busy street. When you have dementia, you have to keep them in a quiet environment. It's very noisy. It is one of the busiest streets in Seattle. There is a constant road traffic and a lot of noise. Pollution was just horrible.
I'd walk into my mom's place, and I could smell the fumes from the cars and stuff in her living quarters. It was just not good.
